Fig2Fig 2013 Race Report

The inaugural Fig2Fig Race was held on Sunday the 1st of December 2013 over a short course and a long course with both courses incorporating all three of the amazing Fig Restaurants, the events major sponsors and architect. Both races started at Port Beach in Fremantle, a short distance from the Pickled Fig. The short course finished at The Naked Fig in Swanbourne and the long course finished just outside of The Wild Fig in Scarborough. The race was structured to be a non-competitive, mentoring style event to increase participation in ocean racing to officially open the down winding season in WA. This proved to be a great success with 70+ competitors entering, the highest numbers for a SUPWA event to date!

Conditions were great with a 15-20 knot tailwind and a 1-1.5 metre swell, perfect for first timers and still great for the seasoned SUP crew. Racing started and it was great to see some of the more experienced paddlers working their way through the packs to provide assistance and pass on valuable knowledge to other paddlers experiencing the stoke of down winding in WA for the first time! The short course participants finished up through a challenging shore break at Swanbourne with a few spectacular spills and wipeouts, a very amusing sight for the spectators! Steve McCullough took out the Men's division and Sally Simpson was the first Female across the line.

It was then time for the mentors to complete the Long Course and charge down to the Wild Fig in Scarborough to the finish. Once again the shore break proved tricky and it was a great spectacle for all on the beach with some great surfing and also some big wipeouts! Pete Baldwin was first across the line for the Males and Christiana Chessa paddled great to be the first Female to complete the Long Course.

It was then back to Swanbourne for presentations and some very tasty food and fast flowing drinks put on by the Naked Fig restaurant.

Big congratulations to all winners and more importantly all participants, who for some this was the first time paddling in the ocean and the first time participating in a downwind event!

Special thanks to major sponsor and event creators The Fig Group, Ian Grosse from Starboard for the amazing prizes and Fremantle Sea Rescue for the water coverage on the day.
